Holiday Information

The region of Abruzzi is only a short distance from Rome, yet it is a hidden gem, one of the most interesting and less known regions of Italy. With three national parks, and natural reserves and regional parks, nature abounds and it offers great walking options.

The land of bears, wolves and chamois, the National Parks in Abruzzi are part of the Abruzzi Apennines and are characterised by its high, imposing mountains, which are deeply furrowed by yawning valleys and is a stunningly beautiful and varied walking region. During this walking holiday we will explore the three National parks, each one offering a different insight into this stunning region not only for the cultural history and human works of art, but also the rare natural scenery. You will be sure to discover the true Italy on this fully guided walking holiday through the three National Parks.

We start in the Majella: The mountain range rises majestically above the Adriatic Sea and more than thirty of its peaks are over 2000 metres and culminates at Mount Amaro at 2,793 metres. Further down dramatic canyons and ravines cut their way through the stone and two thirds of the entire flora and fauna of Italy can be found here. It is an inexhaustible source of natural beauty and human history with shepherds shelters, lonely churches, monasteries and ancient hermitages just waiting to be explored. We will explore the Orfento Gorge and walk to the secluded hermitages.

Half way through the week, we move to the Abruzzi National Park. The geography characterised by lush alpine valleys, deep gorges and gentle peaks, have helped preserve this habitat. The success of the park lies also in the fact that it has been able to combine the preservation of nature with the local social- economic development of local communities. The park has played an essential role in the preservation of some of the most important species of Italian Fauna: Marsican Brown Bear, the Abruzzi Chamois and Wolf. During our walks here you will enjoy some stunning walks through alpine valleys and beech woods.

The grand finale of your walking is exploring the Gran Sasso Park, with the highest peak in the Apennines earning it its title: the ‘Big Stone’. Both planned walks start from the amazing Campo Imperatore, giving the impression of being in the Himalayas.
