The land of bears, wolves and chamois, the National Majella Park in Abruzzo is part of the Abruzzi Appennines and is characterised by its high, imposing wild limestone blocks, which are deeply furrowed by yawning valleys and is a stunningly beautiful and varied walking region. The Majella, known locally as the ‘Mother Mountain’ lies only two hours East from bustling Rome, in the highest and wildest section of the Abruzzi mountains.
The Majella massif rises majestically above the Adriatic Sea and more than thirty of its peaks are over 2000 metres and culminates at Mount Amaro at 2,793 metres. Further down dramatic canyons and ravines cut their way through the stone and two thirds of the entire flora and fauna of Italy can be found here. It is an inexhaustible source of natural beauty and human history with shepherds shelters, lonely churches, monasteries and ancient hermitages just waiting to be explored.
This tour gives us a fascinating insight into the Italian’s cultural history and human works of art, as well as experiencing the Majella’s amazing and rare natural scenery. You will be sure to discover the true Italy on this fully guided walking holiday through the Majella National Park.
